about

Further explorations in time and perspective. 't' takes an idea I had many years ago where sound or music become something new under different time manipulation. This first came about while experimenting with the software 'paul stretch'. Taking tracks I'd recorded I would slow them by up to 800% to create beautiful soundscapes that evolved over minutes rather than a few bars. Bars seem to disappear and you're left with music that moves together but seems to float in the air indefinitely.

The original concept was to create music that no one would ever hear in its original form but would be stretched to create this new perspective. The results were often interesting and surprising however there was a lack of directing where it went in the moment. Fast forward some years and lots of trial and error I found myself sat with a granular synth. In this case I was taking sound sources of a few seconds in length. Simple things like instruments played in odd ways like being plucked from behind the bridge or a kitchen light shade that rang in an interesting way.

The ability to play the granular synth as an instrument puts me back in the seat however the way a granular synth can be programmed you have these beautiful moments of chaos that make you feel this thing is alive, it's breathing. So much of the music on 't' is devoid of metronomic time but it moves at the time I felt it needed to while playing the pieces. Each piece is one stereo track and performed in one take.
